Educating the Invisible<\/h1>

The Inner World of the Human Being<\/h2>
What is essential is invisible to the eye.

Can we truly say we have ever seen a thought? Or an emotion?

And yet, our actions arise from what we think and feel.

And from our actions, the reality we inhabit takes shape.

The chair you are sitting on, the device in front of you, the clothes you are wearing: before existing outwardly, they existed within someone. They were an intuition, an image, an intention. Then they became a project, a gesture, matter.

This is why we can say that our inner world is not merely \u201cinner\u201d. It is the first environment we offer to others.

What we cultivate within ourselves influences the way we look, choose, respond and build.

Even when we feel powerless, we have far more power to affect reality than we realise.

It is no coincidence that the Preamble to the Constitution of UNESCO, drafted in 1945, states:
\u201cSince wars begin in the minds of men and women, it is in the minds of men and women that the defences of peace must be constructed.\u201d<\/blockquote>

The Ecology of the Mind<\/h2>
Today, we speak a great deal about ecology, and rightly so: the ecology of the air, of water, of the seas, of the soil, of cities.

But there is another ecology upon which we can, and must, have an impact: what anthropologist Gregory Bateson called the ecology of mind<\/strong>.

The sustainability of the world also begins with the sustainability of the mind that inhabits it.

We are, in a sense, the gardeners of our thoughts. And those thoughts \u2014 whether we want them to or not \u2014 come out of us and influence the world around us.

This is why I often say: every human being is an educator<\/strong>.

We all educate, always, even when we do not think we are doing so. We know this well: we teach by example, not only through words.

Every human being educates the world at every moment, through the quality of their inner world.

Inner Illiteracy<\/h2>
Have you ever wondered where a thought is? How much it weighs? What colour it has?

Perhaps we cannot see it as we see an object. But today we know that mental activity leaves observable traces: brain patterns, electrical variations, response times, physiological correlates. What seems invisible produces measurable effects.

And if the invisible produces effects, then it can be known. If it can be known, it can be educated.

But how much do we truly do this?

Italian children spend around thirteen thousand hours at school between the ages of six and eighteen. They learn to read, to write, to calculate, to programme a computer.

But how many hours, throughout all this time, do we devote to teaching them to know their own inner world?

How many hours do we devote to cultivating self-awareness, understanding and orienting emotions, motivation, empathy, social skills? How many hours do we devote to educating the ability to move through frustration, disagreement, anxiety and distress?

In some ways, we might describe ourselves as inwardly illiterate<\/strong>.

Humanity has evolved technologically in extraordinary ways, yet it has remained incredibly behind in its own inner technology.

And yet, in order to face the great challenges of our time \u2014 climate, conflict, artificial intelligence, polarisation, mental health \u2014 we need inner tools.

Our Evolutionary Leap<\/h2>
The final frontier of education is not artificial intelligence. It is inner intelligence.

The future does not need more technology. It needs more humanity.

Educating the invisible is not an abstract or spiritual matter.

It is a matter of literacy: awareness is a skill, intention is a skill, attention is a skill.

These are the capacities that allow us to orient ourselves better in relationships, in decisions, in conflicts, in challenges. These are the capacities that can help us build a more human, peaceful and secure future.

Educating the invisible means taking care of the inner environment from which our influence arises.

The mark of our passage, the footprint we leave in the world, is the fruit of what we have cultivated within ourselves.

This is why we must cultivate ideas. Ideas have power when they are shared. They have strength when they are welcomed. They generate change when they are lived.

One Minute to Change<\/h2>
Beginning to educate our inner world is not difficult.

It is not necessary to meditate for hours, nor to spend weeks on retreat, nor to fly to India.

To begin, one minute may be enough.

In one minute, we can change the mindset from which we respond. And when the mindset from which we respond changes, the footprint we leave changes too.

Let us practise together.

Sixty seconds. Five very simple steps.

1. Make yourself comfortable.<\/strong>
Sit comfortably and steadily. If you wish, close your eyes. When we close our eyes, we reduce external stimuli and naturally become more available to turn our attention towards ourselves.

Take a slow, deep breath. Within yourself, say a simple phrase:

I am OK, just as I am in this moment.<\/strong>

2. Prefigure yourself in a state of peace.<\/strong>
Imagine yourself in a state of peace, completely at ease, serene and relaxed. You do not need to force anything. Simply allow the image of yourself in a calmer state to emerge.

3. Take distance.<\/strong>
For a moment, detach yourself from what holds you back, worries you or agitates you. Take distance from all of this and say to yourself:

I can simply be here, with myself, in this moment.<\/strong>

4. Make a small commitment.<\/strong>
Take another slow, deep breath. Then say to yourself:

I am now dedicating this moment to myself. I will try to do this every day. I now give myself the possibility to truly try.<\/strong>

5. Choose a concrete action.<\/strong>
Choose a small, simple and possible action that will make you feel better as you come out of this short practice. A gesture through which you can bring this state out into your life.

Now remain in silence for a few moments.

Take one final slow, deep breath and return fully present to this place.

Perhaps the world outside has not changed in these sixty seconds.

But for you, the inner place from which you will go out to meet it in a minute has changed.

A single minute of interiorisation can change a response.
If a response changes, a relationship can change.
If a relationship changes, the footprint you leave in the world can change.

The world does not change when ideas change. It changes when the minds that think them change.
