A Step Inwards
Not a step back: a step inwards. That is where every real change begins.
The world is as it is because we are as we are
We look at the world and wish it were different. Fairer, more human, more peaceful. It is a legitimate and deeply felt desire.
Yet there is an uncomfortable truth worth starting from: the world we live in is also the way it is because we are the way we are. The great systems — the economy, society, institutions — are made up of people. And people are shaped by their inner world: by what they think, what they fear, and what they give their attention to.
Changing macro-systems from the outside is enormously complex. We cannot do it directly, nor immediately. And yet there is one place where we can act fully, starting now: our inner world.
Outside, we depend. Within, we can act.
Try noticing where your attention usually goes. Almost always outwards: what is happening, what others are saying, what we should have and do not.
When your attention lives outside you, you become dependent on the external world. Your mood, your worth, your peace become hostage to what you cannot control.
But if the world around you does not reflect the world you would like to live in, there is only one move that truly depends on you: directing your attention elsewhere. No longer outwards, but inwards.
This is not an escape from reality. It is the opposite. It is the act of no longer merely reacting, and beginning to listen.
Not a step back, but a step inwards
In the face of complexity, instinct suggests taking a step back: withdrawing, defending ourselves, closing ourselves off.
But what we need is not a step back. It is a step inwards.
A step back distances us from life. A step inwards brings us closer to ourselves — to the only place from which we can truly begin again. It is there, within our inner space, that the quality of our view of the world is decided. And that view, in turn, shapes the world we build.
Those who come into contact with themselves do not become isolated: they return to the world more present, more able to be with others, and more capable of making an impact on reality.
Becoming more human is a practice
There is good news in all this. The ability to look within is not a gift reserved for the few. It is not inherited; it is trained.
Awareness cannot be forced into someone, but it can be cultivated — just as we cultivate the strength of a muscle or the care of a relationship. Every time we bring our attention back to ourselves, even for just a moment, we are doing precisely this: we are becoming more human.
We do not need hours, nor perfect conditions. We simply need to begin. One minute of presence, repeated, is worth more than a grand intention never put into practice.
In a world that constantly pulls us outwards, pausing and turning inwards is almost a revolutionary act. And yet it is the simplest, the most ancient, the most important.
You can do it today. Not a step back. A step inwards.
Turning this gesture into a skill, rather than leaving it as a good intention, is what AWARENESS – The Courage to Live offers: two intensive days, live online, to train awareness, attention and presence, and to learn how to navigate complexity starting from the only place that truly depends on you: your inner world.
